Many children in the diaspora understand some Yoruba but cannot reply. That gap widens until the language slips away.

Vocabulary alone does not build understanding. What helps is a live tutor who gives a child usable phrases and a safe way to practise them.

The course starts from the alphabet and tones, so no prior Yoruba is needed. Each week builds step on the last, teaching the core phrases and proverbs that make the language stay.

36 lessons across three terms, following the UK school calendar, with one live lesson each week.
Taught in Standard Yoruba, Ọ̀yọ́-based, with full tone marks from the first lesson.

TERM 1

Autumn: Sounds, greetings and everyday words

  • The Yoruba alphabet, tones and pronunciation
  • Greetings for morning, afternoon and evening: Ẹ káàárọ̀, Ẹ káàsán, Ẹ káalẹ́
  • Everyday words: family, food, home and friends
  • Introducing yourself and speaking to elders
TERM 2

Spring: Conversation and culture

  • Following and joining a short exchange
  • Numbers, colours, days and time
  • Proverbs (òwe) and what they mean
  • Traditions, respect and everyday customs
TERM 3

Summer: Confidence and connection

  • Talking about yourself, family and daily life
  • Folk tales (àlọ́), songs and sayings
  • Naming traditions, market and food vocabulary, festival words
  • Review, consolidation and guided speaking practice

The part most courses skip

Bí ọmọdé bá mọ ọwọ́ wẹ̀, ó máa bá àgbàgbà jẹun.
Literally: if a child knows how to wash their hands, they will eat with elders.

It is not about hygiene. It is about a child who prepares themselves earning a place among people who know more. Every proverb works like this, and a child who only has the translation misses the point. Ms Folarin teaches the meaning alongside the words.

How a lesson runs

Every child practises, no child is put on the spot

Cameras stay off for the whole lesson. Most of the class takes part by typing in the chat. Microphones are muted by default, and where a spoken answer helps, the tutor calls on one student at a time and unmutes them for a short turn. Children are known by their first name or username only. Every lesson is recorded and available to watch back.

What age are the Yoruba classes for?
Yoruba is for children aged 10 and over. No prior knowledge is needed.
My child does not speak any Yoruba. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Many children start from scratch. Ms Folarin begins wherever your child is and builds one clear step each week.
What if my child does not want to speak?
Cameras are off and microphones are muted by default. Most of the lesson is taken part in by typing in the chat. The tutor calls on one student at a time for a short spoken answer, and not every child speaks in every lesson. A child who prefers to listen and type can do that.
Which Yoruba do you teach?
Standard Yoruba, Ọ̀yọ́-based, with full tone marks. This is the variety used in Nigerian schools and published materials, so your child can read and use anything they pick up later.
How much homework is there?
Around 20 minutes a week, set by Ms Folarin and included in the workbook.
How much do Yoruba lessons for children cost?
The annual package is £180 for the year. The monthly plan is £18 a month over 12 months. On the annual package that works out from £5 per lesson.
Is a one-to-one option available?
Yes. One-to-one Yoruba lessons are available by arrangement. Contact us to discuss what would suit your child.
What if my child misses a lesson?
Every lesson is recorded and available to watch back. Your child can catch up without falling behind.
My family is in the USA or Canada. Can we join?
Lessons are at 12.30pm UK time, which is 7.30am Eastern and 4.30am Pacific. Please contact us if you would like to be told when we open a time that suits North America.
Can I cancel the monthly plan?
Yes, you can cancel your monthly plan, at which point your access to the platform and resources will end.
Do I need to know Yoruba to help my child?
No. The course starts from the alphabet and tones, and homework is designed to be done without a Yoruba-speaking adult.
